DILLON AND THE PIRATES OF XONIRA is a novel that’s a semi-sequel to DILLON AND THE LEGEND OF THE GOLDEN BELL that actually wasn’t intended to be a novel. It began as an idea for a 10 page comic book story. Since I have zero ability and confidence in being able to write a comic book story, I wrote a short story with the intention of passing it along to another writer who knows what he’s doing when it comes to writing a comic book script.
That project fell through and by that time I had time to sit around and think some more about the characters and the story. I always knew it was going to be just part of a larger story but I didn’t intend on starting it right away. Dillon and the rest of the characters were kicking at the walls, demanding that I get to work on on the rest of the story, so I did.
Here’s the basic plot: While on vacation, Dillon is contacted by the beautiful and seductive Toi Lahayne, an operative of The Braithwaite Group. They’ve uncovered information that Dillon’s old friend, Lord Murphy C’jai is involved with the renewed pirate activity on Xonira. Dillon assembles a motley crew of modern day pirates to return to the island kingdom of Xonira and finds that once more that island kingdom is beleaguered by nefarious threats from both within and without.
I’m always asked why did I do another Xonira story right after LEGEND OF THE GOLDEN BELL? First off, while it’s the next book in the series it actually takes place roughly about a year after Dillon and Eli leave Xonira. In between there’s three adventures that take place: DILLON AND THE LAST RAIL TO KHUSRA, DEAD BEAT IN KHUSRA which are in the process of being written now and will be made available as ebooks later on this year. And DILLON AND THE ALCHEMIST’S MORNING COFFEE which you can read right now in Black Pulp. So for you guys it’s the next adventure but for Dillon it’s been a while since he’s been back there.
Toi Lahyane and The Braithwaite Group are characters I’ve been wanting to introduce for a time now but never could find the right story until PIRATES OF XONIRA. And it was also the right story to bring in a couple of characters who have proven to be favorites with a lot of readers:
This is Allie Pierri and her son Shon. They’re a French mother-and-son team of mercenaries. Allie’s a descendant of a King’s Musketeer and her family has faithfully served France for generations. Allie’s teaching her son the business. She won’t let him shoot anybody until he’s eighteen which he thinks is a drag but he does get to beat up on people with his nunchuks.
